It Takes a Village overwhelmed by need in the Hilltowns

What started as a seasonal appeal for kids’ toys at Christmas morphed into a much larger call for public help when The Village Closet in Huntington began to face an unprecedented need for its resources. The Toys for Tots program makes Christmas a joyous time for a lot of kids who wouldn’t have it otherwise, but for many families in the Hilltowns just getting to Dec. 25 is an uphill struggle.


It Takes a Village seeks help giving back-to-school backpacks to families in need

It Takes a Village in Huntington in Huntington and its Village Closet clothing and family needs outlet is planning a back-to-school celebration, complete with student backpacks filled with school supplies and back-to-school clothing for kids of all ages on Aug. 18. And, as always, everything at the Village Closet is 100% free. 

But this year, the organization’s usual supplier of backpacks has come up dry, and the Village Closet needs to help finding and paying for 250 backpacks.

“It all comes back to, who is taking care of these babies?” 

The board of directors of a nonprofit that serves families in the rural hill towns of Western Massachusetts is on the hunt for new membership. Huntington-based It Takes A Village was founded as a neighbor-to-neighbor support network in 2009, but has expanded in the years since to provide free postpartum and early parenting resources to the community. In 2022, it worked with over 2,000 families in 120 towns across the sparsely populated region.
