School Based Free Store
It Takes a Village opened a pilot, school-based program within the Gateway Regional School District called the “Free Store at Room 234.” This was created in addition to our Village Closet Family Resource Center to meet the needs of students reluctant to visit the main center, due to a perceived stigma.
Students are able to find:
- clothing
- shoes
- school supplies
- personal hygiene products
- sports equipment
The Free Store helps students understand the importance of reused clothing- as opposed to fast fashion that ends up in landfills.
Students are able to access the store five days a week, with the help of It Takes a Village staff, school administrators, and student volunteers.

"It Takes a Village is invaluable to the community at Gateway Regional. The consistent and selfless nature of the program ensures all of our students and families are supported with resources they need. Their impact is evident and palpable."
