About Us

It Takes a Village (ITAV) is a women-led nonprofit dedicated to being the “village” every family deserves.

What began with one mother supporting her neighbor has grown into a unique, well-regarded model, that is the only one of its kind in New England, serving the 4 counties of Western MA.

Using a science-backed model called the Protective Factors Framework, our programs are designed to address the immediate challenges of the postpartum period, meet children’s basic needs, and nurture the emotional well-being of families. Our impact extends beyond individual families, driving systemic change that builds resilient communities.

Over the past decade, ITAV has distributed $3.4 million in essential supplies and delivered critical services to nearly 27,000 people. This impact has been made possible by a small but dedicated staff, 45 volunteers and an operating budget stretched to maximize every dollar.

Our Mission

Our mission is to break the cycles of isolation and poverty by providing families with the resources they need to thrive.

“Your organization has changed my life. thank you so much for all that you do!!!”

Our Vision

We’re building strong, resilient communities where parents have what they need, children grow up healthy and loved, and every family can build a brighter, more stable future.

Our Work

It Takes a Village strengthens families before, during, and after difficult times- working to prevent the isolation and stress that can lead to crisis.

We support families on their journey to stability and self-sufficiency through the following free programs:

  • A comprehensive, 6,000 square foot family basic needs free store, the largest in Western MA
  • The only Diaper Bank in the rural Hilltowns where nearly 50% of families struggle to afford them
  • Postpartum home visits for isolated families with babies
  • School-based, basic needs free stores in Title 1 school districts
  • Pre-K child enrichment classes to build children’s social-emotional skills
  • Caregiver support groups and parenting-skills workshops
  • Workforce training partnerships to improve upward economic mobility for at-risk youth and individuals with disabilities
